Key takeaways
- Treat chargeable weight as a rating input, not a live freight price.
- Measure packed cartons or pallets, not unpacked product dimensions.
- Airport-to-airport and door-to-door quotes are not directly comparable unless the same handoffs are included.
- Special cargo can change handling and acceptance requirements before price is meaningful.
What an air-freight calculator can calculate
A calculator can do useful arithmetic before a quote: total actual weight, total shipment volume and an estimated chargeable weight. It cannot know a current airline or forwarder rate, available capacity, security handling, origin fees, destination fees or final-mile charges unless those values come from a live provider quote.
This page deliberately does not multiply chargeable weight by a made-up dollars-per-kilogram figure. Market rates vary by lane, capacity, commodity, service and date.
Calculate chargeable weight
A common IATA air-cargo method compares actual weight with volumetric weight. IATA guidance uses a general volumetric divisor of 6,000 when dimensions are in cubic centimetres. The higher figure may become the chargeable weight, subject to the carrier and applicable tariff.
| Input | Example shipment | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Packed pieces | 3 cartons at 60 x 50 x 40 cm | 360,000 cm3 total volume |
| Actual packed weight | 45 kg total | 45 kg |
| Volumetric calculation | 360,000 / 6,000 | 60 kg |
| Preliminary chargeable weight | Higher of actual or volumetric | 60 kg |
The divisor and rounding/rating rules can vary by product or carrier. Confirm the actual rule used for the quote before relying on the estimate.
Have the packed dimensions and weight?
Use the calculated chargeable-weight input with the actual lane and service scope to check freight options.

Quote-ready inputs
- Origin pickup postal code or airport and destination delivery postal code or airport.
- Number of pieces and packed dimensions for every handling unit.
- Actual gross weight and whether pieces are stackable.
- Commodity description, declared value and any temperature, dangerous-goods or security constraints.
- Required delivery window and whether airport-to-airport or door service is needed.
These inputs change the operational task. A light but bulky shipment may rate on volume; a dense shipment may rate on actual weight; a door move adds trucking and handoffs that an airport-only rate does not cover.
Separate freight rate from accessorial scope
| Quote element | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Air linehaul | The airport-to-airport movement and rate basis. |
| Origin handling | Pickup, screening, warehouse acceptance and terminal processing may be separate. |
| Destination handling | Breakdown, terminal availability, customs-related handling and release can sit outside linehaul. |
| Final delivery | Truck delivery, appointment and site constraints are a separate operational leg. |

Perishables, regulated goods, batteries, dangerous goods and unusually large pieces can require acceptance checks that a generic calculator cannot model safely. In those cases, provide the commodity details before assuming the cargo can move under a standard general-cargo rate.
